Are you using 32bit binary for a 64 bit linux server?

I'm running a 32-bit FreeBSD binary. Here's the most recent output from autoupdate/update.log:

[2009-04-20 06:35:09] Checking for new release...
[2009-04-20 06:35:10] [ERROR] Unknown response from server.
[2009-04-20 23:49:27] Checking for new release...
[2009-04-20 23:49:28] [ERROR] Unknown response from server.
[2009-04-21 00:10:15] Checking for new release...
[2009-04-21 00:10:15] [ERROR] Unknown response from server.
[2009-04-21 00:11:15] Checking for new release...
[2009-04-21 00:11:15] [ERROR] Unknown response from server.

I am able to lynx to that URL (without the extra "s" which I'm assuming was a typo) and get a File Not Found error.

I have installed a fresh freebsd 7.1 in our lab. installed /usr/ports/misc/compat6x/
installed 4.0.1, it detects the new release and downloaded 4.0.2 automatically.
