PHP won't compile, no matter what settings are used

I was very excited to see that LiteSpeed can handle the compilation of Apache for us. This is really cool. However, it's not working (for me at least).

    I'm using 3.3.3 Standard on OS X 10.5.

I'll give a very simple configuration example, and the default, as well as the one I actually want to use (the settings I need if I'm going to run LiteSpeed in production with PHP).

    #1: PHP5 with no options:
    Version: 5.2.5
    Extra PATH:
    Install Path: /usr/local/litespeed/lsphp5
    Parameters:
    Opcode: None

    #2 PHP with default options
    Version: 5.2.5
    Extra PATH:
    Install Path: /usr/local/litespeed/lsphp5
    Parameters: --with-mysqli --with-zlib --with-gd --enable-shmop --enable-track-vars --enable-sockets --enable-sysvsem --enable-sysvshm --enable-magic-quotes --enable-mbstring
    Opcode: None

#3 PHP with my desired options
    Version: 5.2.5
    Extra PATH:
    Install Path: /usr/local/litespeed/lsphp5
    Parameters: --with-mysqli --with-zlib --with-gd --enable-shmop --enable-track-vars --enable-sockets --enable-sysvsem --enable-sysvshm --enable-magic-quotes --enable-mbstring --with-mhash --with-mcrypt --with-dom --enable-simplexml --with-pdo-mysql
    Opcode: APC

    configure: error: invalid feature name:
    sysvshm

It appears to me that part of the problem is that line breaks are being inserted. Note at the bottom of the last output "invalid feature name: sysvshm". That would only make sense if there was a line-break separating the -- from the sysvshm. And it just so happens that that is exactly where the line wrapped in the TEXTAREA. In order to test this theory, I tried the last two with a line break after each option, so none would be split across lines. Here's the output from only the last, due to a 10000 character limitation:

#3 again, with each configuration parameter on its own line:

I'm still getting "invalid package name" errors this way, so I'm not sure what to make of that.

The web based UI suggests that there's no need to download PHP source code or extension source code, simply by virtue of the fact that it is never mentioned anywhere, and web-based UIs usually don't require using the terminal. Perhaps I was misled by this, and the real problem is that I have to download source and put it somewhere first before it can be compiled?

The documentation talks about downloading and compiling, but it seems to be talking about ONLY doing it through the terminal, and it never mentions the web-based UI as a means of compiling. So it's my understanding that you can do it EITHER in the web UI OR on the command line, but that you don't need to use BOTH in order to compile PHP.

Okay, typed "env" at the shell and got the value of the PATH environment variable and pasted it into the "Extra PATH environment" field, and also changed wrap=on to wrap="virtual" by editing the php file. (I had already done this before I discovered your post that 3.3.4 could be downloaded.)

Is this what you meant about the Path Env? Just paste it verbatim with colons as separators?

(It didn't work, but I did it before finding your post about upgrading gcc via Xcode 3. So if that's what you meant, I'll try again once the upgrade finishes.)

Got much further, but still failed

It looked like it was going to work, as it got much further than before, but it still ultimately failed, with "ERROR Could not configure PHP build"

    Here're my options:
    --with-mysqli --with-zlib --with-gd --enable-shmop --enable-track-vars --enable-sockets --enable-sysvsem --enable-sysvshm --enable-magic-quotes --enable-mbstring --with-mhash --with-mcrypt --with-dom --enable-simplexml --with-pdo-mysql

I also checked APC, and added my entire PATH variable's value to the "PATH" field.

    Here's the log:

    this time without GD

Since GD seemed to be involved in the last failure, I removed it and tried again. (and for grins I used 5.2.3... or was it 5.2.4?) Here's the tail end of the log this time:

    This Is Hopeless--i Give Up!

Okay, I cut out all the options I need to add, and removed GD too from the defaults, and it still fails.

checking for sqlite 3 support for PDO... yes
checking for PDO includes... checking for PDO includes... /usr/local/bin/litespeed/phpbuild/php-5.2.5/ext
    checking for char *... yes
checking size of char *... configure: error: cannot compute sizeof (char *)
    See `config.log' for more details.

    ...

I tried again with NO OPTIONS, and it succeeded. It's almost useless to me of course, but the process worked without any options. That should be useful data for you, if nothing else.

Well, you have to install all the libraries/packages that PHP modules depends on. It is not a problem of the LiteSpeed GUI, but your development environment.

Okay, but then how is this different from doing everything by hand at the command line? It seems misleading to have a web-based interface if you've got to drop into Terminal anyway.

Having the UI seems to suggest that it is sufficient. Given that it is not, it would be helpful to have some indication of this on that page of the web console. Do you see what I mean? From the user's point of view, since it is downloading PHP itself, why would it not download the other libraries needed as well, and everything?

If for some reason it is not possible for that to happen, then ideally the script that runs could check for each of the needed libraries, and give a user-friendly message informing the user what's missing, rather than just an error and the log. That would go a long way to helping LiteSpeed be much easier to use.

It is a lot harder to do what you want. and some are just one time job, some require special permission, etc. Every system is different, it closes to be impossible to make it work well on all the platforms.

When you need to upgrade your PHP binary, you will appreciate the GUI.
